Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento embarked on an intricate strategy to consolidate all diagnostic, treatment, and support services provided by the Sutter Cancer Center. This entailed creating a new subterranean radiation treatment facility and renovating space in two existing buildings to house advanced technologies and treatments. Silva Stowell led the project team. Work required designing solutions to engineering challenges that involved utility-intensive site work and a complex shielding structure for technologically-advanced radiological equipment.

Our challenge was to create a healing atmosphere that soothes patients caught up in highly-technical and often-frightening procedures. Integrated design incorporated water features, natural light, artwork, and the use of warm materials and colors to humanize the facilities as much as possible.
